Developing an Abstract

An algorithm is defined as a process or set of rules to be followed in calculations or other problem-solving operations by a computer. Algorithms have been introduced into the architecture field to rationalize complex forms. Yet algorithms are rarely associated with a traditional design process, and attempting to use the power of an algorithm to make designing easier for the architect. My idea is a simple joining of the architect with technology to improve the process of design. I will be creating a new process of design that focuses on linking algorithms with the designer to allow for a new method of home design based on each individual’s different needs.
Currently in the architecture community, there is a disconnection between digital design and traditional design process. Currently digital design focuses on algorithms that are used to rationalize complex forms. These complex forms have begun to be translated to built form, but not without changing the way the materials are constructed and used.  New technology of: laser cutters, plasma cutters, 3d printers, cnc etc. are all used to make these custom parts, and all these fabrication techniques are very expensive and time consuming. Rather then using algorithms to produce these complex forms, algorithms should be written to help the everyday designer expedite the traditional design process.
The methodology will begin as an exploration into a social issue into today’s society, housing. Currently developers dominate the housing market. Developers simply design a single home and reproduce it again and again. This process does not take into account that every individual is different and has different needs. Therefore everyone should live in a different home that is designed to cater his or her individual needs directly. My new design fusion of algorithms and the traditional design process can solve the issue of an individual and mass production in a way that could not be achieved before. I would like to end up with a parametric system that can be easily manipulated to create new and varying forms based on each demographics in a given area to create housing forms.
